His Excellency Dr. Mohammed Saeed Al-Zaouri, Minister of Social Affairs and Labor, received Mr. Abdul Sattar Esouf, Head of the International Organization for Migration (IOM) Mission in Yemen, this morning at his office in the capital, Aden. The meeting was also attended by Mr. Mohannad Al-Rubaie, Director of the IOM Office in Aden, and Mr. Mostafa Al-Attar, Head of the Organization’s Communications Unit.

At the beginning of the meeting, Minister Al-Zaouri praised the humanitarian role and continuous efforts of the IOM in supporting Yemen. He highlighted the growing burdens the country faces due to the monthly influx of large numbers of migrants and refugees arriving on Yemen’s shores, especially in the capital, Aden, which has become a major transit point for these migrants.

Minister Al-Zaouri stressed that this large influx has led to various security and social challenges, as some migrants are forced to sleep in the streets and compete with the local community for limited services. This comes amid the difficult economic conditions the country is going through, underscoring the need to strengthen coordination and cooperation between the Ministry and the IOM across various areas, including security and economic aspects. He also called on the IOM to establish humanitarian response centers to provide essential services to migrants and refugees, in coordination with local authorities.

For his part, Mr. Abdul Sattar Esouf expressed the IOM’s appreciation for the major challenges Yemen faces in dealing with waves of migration and asylum seekers. He affirmed the organization’s understanding of the significant economic and social pressures resulting from this situation.

Abdul Sattar noted that the IOM is continuously engaging with donor entities to urge them to provide more support to host countries, foremost among them Yemen. He also called on the internationally recognized Yemeni government to intensify its diplomatic efforts with donors to enhance humanitarian aid for migrants and refugees.

The meeting was attended by several deputy ministers and department directors from the Ministry’s headquarters.
