The Ministerial Council of the Ministry of Social Affairs and Labor held its regular meeting today, Sunday, at the Ministry’s headquarters in the capital Aden, chaired by H.E. Dr. Mohammed Saeed Al-Zauri, Minister of Social Affairs and Labor, and attended by the Deputy Ministers, Assistant Deputies, and Directors General.
The meeting was dedicated to discussing performance reports and following up on the level of implementation of previous assignments, in addition to reviewing a package of issues related to the ministry’s sectors.
The meeting also reviewed the worsening humanitarian situation in the capital Aden and Lahj Governorate as a result of heavy rains and flash floods. The Council issued an urgent appeal to international organizations operating in the country, civil society organizations, businessmen, and active charitable institutions to provide relief to affected families, deliver urgent humanitarian assistance, shelter those whose homes have collapsed and whose properties were swept away, and support them in facing their harsh humanitarian conditions.
The meeting further discussed a number of issues listed on its agenda, including reviewing circulars issued by the Minister regarding the necessity of exclusively using the national currency for processing fees of local labor seeking employment abroad, and directing the ministry’s offices in the governorates to deposit occupational health and safety fees into the Central Bank, prohibiting any use of such funds outside official frameworks.
The Council also commended the outcomes of the joint meeting between the Ministers of Social Affairs and Labor and Transport, during which the final draft of Yemen’s accession to the Maritime Labour Convention (MLC) was approved. The Council endorsed the final draft of the agreement, called for the completion of necessary administrative procedures, and urged its prompt submission to the Cabinet for adoption.
In another agenda item, the Council listened to a visual presentation on the mechanism of the new electronic platform delivered by the Director General of Systems and Information. Members provided several technical comments, and specialists were instructed to complete the required updates in preparation for the platform’s launch as soon as possible.
The meeting also addressed a number of issues related to the Ministry’s functions and adopted a series of decisions and assignments, with follow-up on their implementation scheduled for the next session.
