Saleh Mahmoud Hassan, Deputy Minister of Social Affairs and Labor for the Social Welfare Sector, met this morning at the ministry’s headquarters in the capital, Aden, with Mr. Tila Mohamed, Head of Mission for the Dutch branch of Médecins Sans Frontières (Doctors Without Borders).
During the meeting, the Deputy Minister expressed the ministry’s regret, on behalf of His Excellency Dr. Mohammed Saeed Al-Zauri, Minister of Social Affairs and Labor, regarding the organization's decision to end its operations in Yemen due to the challenges it faced in some areas. He praised the efforts of the organization and its medical teams in providing support and humanitarian aid to the population across various regions.
For his part, Mr. Tila Mohamed confirmed that the suspension of the organization’s activities in Yemen will begin in April. He assured that the organization is committed to ensuring the rights of its local staff, who number 390 employees across the governorates of Aden, Taiz, and Marib. He further explained that the organization is coordinating with the Ministry of Public Health and Population to complete the handover process before its departure by June 2025.
In a separate discussion, the Deputy Minister met with Mr. Mohamed Moamen, Director of Operations at Save the Children, and Mr. Aziz Khaled, Head of Protection Programs at the organization’s Aden office, to review the progress achieved under the joint plan for 2024, as well as work plans for 2025.
The meeting, attended by several officials—including Muneef Al-Mahrabi, Director General of Legal Affairs and Head of the Minister’s Office; Ihab Babresh, Director General of Social Defense; and Monia Al-Azzani, Director General of Social Assistance—provided the Deputy Minister with insights into the organization’s priorities and its role in supporting vulnerable children in the targeted governorates. These efforts align with the ministry’s National Social Protection Strategy for Vulnerable Children for the years 2026–2027.
